MSD Approach to Energy Access
This solution addresses the 2.4 billion people worldwide who suffer from energy poverty in Global for energy poor in underserved areas
Poor communities lack access to reliable, affordable, clean energy sources. Lack of access to modern energy services severely limits educational and economic development opportunities in these communities. It also can compound environmental issues (e.g., charcoal use and deforestation) and negatively impact health (e.g., respiratory disease). Reliable, affordable clean energy alternatives are often unavailable outside of cities. Mercy Corps uses a market systems development (MSD) approach to energy access by facilitating and stimulating linkages between existing entrepreneurs, suppliers, and distributors in urban areas with “last mile” consumers in rural areas.
