Proper Application Design

Summary

A number of consciously designed features were included in the mobile health smart phone application for this disease tracking solution. The Open Data Kit (ODK) based application called CommCare sits at the center of this solution. This software was chosen for several reasons--namely longitudinal tracking, the ability to reassign contacts, and algorithm-based decision support features. The basic steps for using the app include:
1. Register contact details upon first visit by the contact tracer
2. Follow-up with contacts daily for 21 days to monitor symptoms
3. Close the contact from the system once the 21-day period has been completed or for other reasons, e.g., the contact has been confirmed to have Ebola or has moved permanently to another area
